WhatsApp appears to be building automatic top-ups for UPI Lite, the small payments wallet inside the app. Hidden code in the current stable version, 2.26.42.74, points to the feature. Tipster Abhishek Yadav spotted it. It has not been announced.
What the code shows
The code suggests you would pick a top-up amount and a low-balance level. When your balance falls to that level, the wallet would refill itself. You could also set up, pause, resume and cancel the automatic top-ups.
Built-in limits
- The top-up cannot be larger than the authorised mandate amount.
- A top-up is skipped if the daily limit has been reached.
- A top-up is skipped if it would push the wallet past its balance limit.
- A top-up is skipped if no UPI Lite wallet exists for the linked payment service provider.
The wallet limit will likely be set by the user, according to the report.
What is not known yet
Strings in code show what a company is preparing, not what it will release. There is no launch date, and it is unclear who will get the feature first. WhatsApp is owned by Meta. More details are expected soon. If it arrives, set the top-up amount and daily limit with care, so the wallet does not refill more than you intend.
The takeawayWhatsApp may add automatic UPI Lite top-ups in India, so if it launches, choose your top-up amount and limits carefully.
