WhatsApp lets you post a status that only one group can see

WhatsApp announced Group Status on October 29, 2026. Posts go to one group only and vanish after 24 hours, but everyone in that group can see them.

WhatsApp now lets you post a status that only one group can see. The company announced Group Status on October 29, 2026. If you have held back a photo because your boss, your aunt or half your phonebook would see it too, this is the fix.

What changed

A Group Status is posted inside a specific group. Only members of that group can see it. It skips your wider contact list and ignores your normal status privacy settings. Members can view it, react to it and post their own status into the same group. Like the regular Status tab, it disappears after 24 hours.

It was the headline item in a package of four changes aimed at crowded group chats. One of the smaller ones is a permanent pin, which should help group admins. Meeting times, payment details and group rules would no longer need re-pinning every month. The material does not describe the other two changes.

How it differs from before

Since late 2024, you could mention a whole group in a regular status. That pinged the members and gave them temporary access to that one update. Group Status works the other way round. You start from the group, and the audience is set to that group automatically. You do not tag anyone or change privacy settings.

Where to find it

WhatsApp has not published a full walkthrough. Beta testers saw new shortcuts on the group info screen for adding a group status, with text, photos, videos or music allowed. Members may see it in the Updates tab, next to the group icon in the chat list, or on the group info screen. The final layout may differ.

WhatsApp gave no rollout schedule, app version or list of supported platforms. Its screenshots come from the Android app. The tracking site WABetaInfo found the feature in Android and iOS test versions in 2025. If you do not see it yet, update the app and check again in a few days.

What to watch out for

  • Everyone in the group can see it, including people not saved in your contacts.
  • Beta reports say these updates are end-to-end encrypted, so only the group can open them.
  • Encryption does not stop a member from taking a screenshot of what you post.

In a large estate, school or community group, that audience can include strangers. Think about who is in the group before you post.

The takeaway

Before posting a Group Status, check who is in the group, because every member can see it and anyone can screenshot it.
