WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta, is adding four tools to help people catch up on busy group chats. You can now pin a message at the top of a chat with no time limit. New members can also get recent messages from the group, and there is a new way to post updates to a single group.
What changed
- Pinned messages can stay at the top indefinitely, so an address or event detail does not drop away.
- Tap the name of someone who just joined to share recent messages with them.
- Group Status lets you post updates to one group. Members can view, react and post their own.
- A new filter shows unread group chats where someone mentioned you or replied to your message.
WhatsApp says the older messages shared with newcomers stay protected by end-to-end encryption, like other personal chats. That means only the people in the conversation can read them. Group Status updates disappear after 24 hours, like regular Status posts.
Who it helps
Anyone whose family, team or club lives in a group chat. Pinning key details means less scrolling. The mentions and replies filter means you do not have to open every group to find the messages meant for you.
What is not clear yet
The material does not give a date for when each person will see the features, or whether they reach every country at once. It is described as a rollout, so the tools may not show up on every phone right away.
The takeawayIf your group chat is busy, look for the new pin, Group Status and mentions filter as the update reaches your phone.
