A new phone called the Enough Phone aims to do the basic jobs of a phone without pulling you in. It has a small 5.3-inch screen, a battery you can replace, and a choice between standard Android and a stripped-down system that blocks social media, games and web browsers. The makers have not shared a price or a release date in the material available.

What it is

The Enough Phone joins a small group of calmer phones, including the Light Phone III, the Minimal Phone 2 and the Mudita Kompakt. It was built by Will Stults, who sells simple phones through his own business, and Sleke, a software company co-founded by Austin Boer and Brennan Jordan. The makers describe it as a phone with just the right amount of features.

The hardware trade-offs

The makers call 5.3 inches a sweet spot. Smaller would feel cramped, and a smaller body leaves less room for parts. The screen is HD resolution, which the team says still gives 320 pixels per inch, close to what Apple once sold as a Retina display. It is an LCD, not the sharper OLED type, because OLED would have raised the price too much.

  • Processor: MediaTek Dimensity 7500, with software support promised through 2032
  • Camera: Sony 50-megapixel IMX766 sensor, still being tuned
  • Battery: replaceable, which makes the body 12mm thick
  • Water resistance: no rating promised yet

The thick body is more than twice as thick as an iPhone Air. It also lets the camera sit flush with the back of the phone.

Two software choices

Buyers pick stock Android or OdysseyOS, made by Sleke. OdysseyOS blocks social media, games and a proper web browser. This is not a dual-boot setup, so once you choose, you cannot switch back and forth. The team is still working out what happens for customers who want to change, and nothing has been decided. The team says its main focus is making essential apps such as banking, navigation and messaging work well.

Will there be buyers?

Apple tried a small phone and dropped it after two years, and few big brands make compact phones now. The Enough team says demand for smaller screens has grown a lot. It calls itself a boutique brand and says that at its size, that demand is enough to keep the phone going.

What is not known yet

The price, release date and water resistance rating have not been given. The camera is still in development. Anyone tempted should expect a plainer screen and mid-range parts in exchange for a calmer phone, and should think carefully before choosing an operating system, since that choice may be hard to undo.

The takeaway

The Enough Phone trades screen quality and some features for calm, but price, release date and the OS switching rules are still unknown.
