Telus, a major Canadian phone company, is adding scam protection to its new mobility data plans. The tool is called Telus Scam Protection and is powered by Norton, a well-known security software maker. It covers calls, texts and email in one place. Telus announced it on October 20 and says it is the first Canadian provider to include this kind of protection on every new data plan.
What changed
A customer turns the service on once in the My Telus app. After that, it runs in the background. The dashboard inside the app uses the names Safe Call, Safe SMS and Safe Email. The article also mentions a scam assistant. The source says the service has four parts but does not list all of them.
Dan Quick, Telus Vice-President of Mobility Solutions, said customers, and his own friends and family, find it harder to tell a real message from a bad actor as scams become more sophisticated.
Who can use it
- iPhones and iPads on the current version of iOS or either of the two before it
- Android phones running Android 10 or later
- Not available on Talk and Text plans
iPhone owners get a slightly reduced version. Texts from saved contacts are not reviewed, and some dashboard stats for Safe Call, Safe SMS and Safe Email are not available. A phone can also run only one call-screening or caller ID app at a time. Anyone who already uses another scam blocker will have to choose.
Why it matters
The iPhone already filters unknown senders and can silence unknown callers. So the email scanning and the scam assistant are probably the parts iPhone owners will notice most.
The numbers explain the push. Canadians reported more than $704 million in fraud losses in 2025, across more than 112,000 reports to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre. The centre estimates only 5 to 10 per cent of fraud is reported. Scams and phishing also made up 29 per cent of SMS spam complaints to the CRTC's Spam Reporting Centre between October 2025 and March 2026.
What is not clear
The material does not give plan prices or say whether the protection costs extra. It also does not say whether existing Telus customers can add it. Telus and Norton already sell a paid Online Security plan together, so this is not their first joint product.
What to do
Telus customers who get scam calls, texts or email should check the My Telus app or their plan details to see if it is included. Customers of other providers can ask what protection they offer, and what it costs.
The takeawayIf you are a Telus customer on a data plan, check My Telus for Scam Protection, and remember your phone can run only one call-screening app.
