Stripe now lets AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude check balances, pay invoices and move money for a business, which could cut admin but raises access questions.

Stripe, the payment company, has launched Treasury for agents. It lets a business owner hand routine money tasks to an AI assistant, such as ChatGPT or Claude, inside the Stripe account the business already uses. The aim is less paperwork for founders. The catch is that the owner must decide how much control an AI should have over real money.

What it does

Today, an AI agent connected to Stripe Treasury can check account balances, pay invoices, transfer money between accounts and convert currencies. Stripe says owners do not need to learn new software to do this. Stripe's product lead for Treasury, JR Farr, put the idea simply: "Every founder wants to spend more time building and less time on admin."

More is planned. In later updates, agents will be able to create cards and set spending limits. No dates for those features were given.

A real example

Vlad Stan runs Kubrio, an educational platform for children. He says the company "runs on one founder plus AI agents." He uses Stripe Treasury as his main business account. An AI agent he calls Stash reviews the company's financial health every day and reports on balances, subscriptions and payments. That frees him to focus on the creative side of the business.

Who it is for

The product is aimed at startups, solo founders and small teams with little time for admin. The article notes that the number of solo founders earning over $1 million has doubled, a sign that more businesses are staying small and lean.

What to watch

Owners can set permissions for each agent. They choose which actions the AI may take on its own and which need a human to approve first. That works as a check on mistakes, but the owner still has to pick the right level of access and keep watching what the agent does.

  • Setup takes some time, which may be a burden for busy owners.
  • Stripe is not a bank. Banking services come through a third-party partner.
  • Owners should understand that partner relationship to manage funds and follow financial rules.

What is not known yet

The material does not say what Treasury for agents costs, which countries or businesses can use it, or which bank partner provides the banking services. It also does not say which AI assistants beyond ChatGPT and Claude will work with it. Stripe has published documentation for owners who want the details.

The takeaway

Before letting an AI touch business money, decide which actions it can take alone and which need your approval.
