What to do
  1. 1Watch your email and the Spotify app for a verification prompt.
  2. 2Finish the check within seven days of the notice.
  3. 3For a QR code, have the manager open Profile, Your Premium, Manage, then scan it in person.
  4. 4If you are dropped, rejoin the same plan, since joining a different one is blocked for a year.

If you share a Spotify plan, a verification prompt may be coming. Some Family and Duo members are being asked to confirm their location by email or QR code. Once the notice arrives, there are seven days to finish. Miss it and you lose access and drop to a free plan.

What changed

Spotify already checks addresses when someone joins a shared plan, and again if the plan manager moves. Some people may also be asked to re-enter a full address if Spotify cannot confirm where they are. Spotify is not tracking your phone. It is cross-checking addresses.

The QR code check is stricter. The manager opens a code in the app, and the member scans it with their phone camera. Spotify's support page says both people must be in the same place. The code changes every few seconds, so a sent screenshot will not work.

What is not clear

The material does not say how many people are getting the QR prompt or how Spotify picks them. It also gives no wider rollout date. 9to5Google reports some users got around the in-person rule with video calls and multiple devices, but that is not an official option, and Spotify may change how the check works.

If you are dropped, you can rejoin the same plan. You cannot join a different shared plan for a full year. The steps in the alert box above cover what to do when the prompt appears.

The takeaway

If Spotify sends a location check for your shared plan, finish it within seven days to keep Premium and avoid a year-long block on other shared plans.
