SpaceX has reportedly talked with Boost Mobile about launching its own phone service through the budget carrier. The Washington Post says the deal could mean SpaceX buys Boost or simply gets access to its network. SpaceX wants Starlink to become a "major" mobile carrier.
What is being discussed
Elon Musk reportedly spoke last month with Charlie Ergen, chairman of EchoStar, which owns Boost Mobile. SpaceX has been building its mobile service for months. It plans to combine satellites that connect to phones with a network on the ground.
- SpaceX bought wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar last year.
- It recently bought low-band spectrum licenses that could help signals reach inside buildings.
- Bloomberg reported last month that SpaceX wants access to at least 80,000 US cell sites.
Spectrum is the set of radio airwaves that carry phone signals. A cell site is a tower location that sends and receives them.
What is not known yet
Neither SpaceX nor Boost Mobile responded right away to The Verge. No deal has been announced. Boost runs on networks from T-Mobile and AT&T, so SpaceX may need permission from both companies to launch service that way.
For Boost customers, a sale could mean a new owner. For anyone shopping for a low-cost plan, it could mean one more competitor. Nothing changes for customers today.
The takeawaySpaceX is reportedly eyeing Boost Mobile, but nothing is final, so Boost customers do not need to do anything right now.
