Shopify's built-in AI assistant, called Sidekick, can now generate images with transparent backgrounds. That means the picture of an object comes with no backdrop, so it can be placed on a page, banner or design in any color. For small online sellers, it could cut down on editing time.

What is known

The report from OpenTools says only that Sidekick can now create these images. It does not say what the feature costs, which Shopify plans include it, or when every store will see it. It also does not describe how the images look or how to ask for them.

Why sellers should be careful

AI images are getting more realistic, and marketplaces are reacting. Etsy's October 22 update requires truthful product photos. It also requires human-authored functional guides. Etsy still allows AI art that a seller directs, as long as it is disclosed. Mockups, digital downloads and custom work each have specific image rules.

Separately, OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Images 2.0, which makes hyper-realistic images. The report says it can mimic real media, which has sparked debate about misuse and trust in what people see online.

What to do

  • Read each marketplace's image rules before using AI-made pictures.
  • Keep product photos true to the real item.
  • Disclose AI art where a platform asks for it.
The takeaway

AI images can save time, but check each marketplace's rules so your product photos stay truthful.
