Shopify has reportedly paid about $100 million for the web address Shop.com. If that figure holds, it is the biggest public domain sale on record, ahead of the $70 million paid for AI.com. The timing is the interesting part. Google is sending fewer visitors to many websites, and owning a name people type directly may be worth more.
What happened
Market America announced on September 28 that it had completed the sale of SHOP.COM to Shopify. Neither side disclosed a price. A domain broker, Andrew Rosener, posted that Shopify paid $100 million. On Shopify's earnings call, an RBC analyst put the price at about $100 million, and management did not correct him.
Shopify's Shop app had lived at shop.app and is moving to shop.com. Executive Harley Finkelstein called the purchase a declaration of a more ambitious posture for Shop. Sales through Shop more than doubled from a year earlier in the third quarter.
Why search clicks matter here
SaaStr founder Jason Lemkin argues the deal is a reaction to shrinking search traffic. Google now often answers questions on its own results page, so people never visit the site that supplied the answer. SaaStr's own data shows Google's share of its audience fell by about a third in one year.
The losses are uneven. One 2026 analysis found searches that include a company's name lost only 3% of traffic. B2B software sites lost 34%. People who already know who they want still go to that company's site. Generic "how do I do X" searches are the ones disappearing.
There is some counter-evidence. Research firm Seer found the click rate on searches with Google's AI summaries rose from 1.3% in December 2025 to 2.4% in February 2026. The decline may be leveling off.
What Reddit shows
Reddit told investors on October 29 that Google traffic is going away. Its answer is to push people toward logging in. Logged-in and app users make up over 80% of its monetization, and new user retention improved by over 50% from a year ago. Revenue still grew 53%. Its CEO said he is not counting on Google traffic returning.
What to do
Shopify's stock fell 17% in morning trading after sales and subscription revenue missed estimates, so the purchase was not made in an easy quarter. Few businesses will spend anything close to $100 million on a name. The lesson is smaller and cheaper:
- Assume search will keep shrinking as a share of your traffic.
- Make your business name easy to remember, spell and say out loud.
- Build direct routes to customers, such as an app or an email list.
Seer also found brands cited in Google's AI summaries get 35% higher click rates, and those summaries tend to cite brands that already have authority.
The takeawayDo not rely on Google alone; make your name, app or email list a place customers come to directly.
