Shopify says shoppers can now find products and check out through AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude, and store owners can run their shops from those chats too.
Shopify announced that people can shop from its merchants inside AI assistants, and store owners can manage their stores from the same chats. The news is part of its Fall '26 Edition, a big list of updates. The company says buyers can point ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant to a skill called shop.md and let it do the shopping.
Shop.md turns an AI assistant into a personal shopper. Shopify says it can search more than a billion products, check out with Shop Pay, and track orders. Shop Pay is Shopify's saved-details checkout. Because the assistant draws on a buyer's preferences, sizes and order history from the Shop app, it can pick items that fit.
Shop Pay checkout is also arriving inside personal AI agents, starting with Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct. Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct also offer Shop Pay for brands that do not use Shopify.
Shopify says the buyer stays in control of each purchase and the card is never shared with the agent. It says more than 400 million people already use Shop Pay. For purchases from stores outside Shopify, it uses secure tokens from Mastercard, Visa and Discover. American Express is listed as coming soon.
Merchants can connect Shopify to the AI tools they already use and manage products, inventory, orders and performance without leaving the chat. Shopify says the connectors work with nine agents:
Would-be sellers can also turn an idea into a storefront preview in the same chat. Shopify also rebuilt its Sidekick assistant, and a new design tool called Canvas is in early access.
Shopify added seven local payment methods to Shopify Payments: Alipay, WeChat Pay, MB WAY, OXXO, Satispay, Scalapay and GrabPay. It also says Shopify Payments blocks more than 12,000 high-risk payments every minute at no extra cost. Merchants get a rule builder to write their own fraud rules.
Shoppers get one checkout in the Shop app for carts that mix several stores, plus a new Shop.com website. A free badge program for eligible US stores highlights trusted delivery and returns.
The material gives no launch dates for most features, and no pricing beyond the fraud protection and badge program being free. It does not say which countries get each tool. Store owners should check the Fall '26 Edition page for what is available to them.
