Shopify's Shop Pay is adding card network technology so AI agents can complete purchases without seeing your card, keeping your rewards and protections.

Shopify says AI shopping helpers will be able to pay for things without ever seeing your card number. The company has built technology from Visa, Mastercard and American Express into Shop Pay, its checkout feature. Shopify is also working with Discover. The goal is to let you hand a purchase to an AI agent while your card stays out of its hands.

What changed

An AI agent is a program that shops for you: it searches, compares and, increasingly, buys. Rohit Mishra, Shopify's vice president of product, posted on X on Wednesday, Oct. 28, that buyers will be able to use Shop Pay at any merchant, whether or not it runs on Shopify. In his words, "The agent never sees the buyer's card." He added that buyers keep the rewards, protection and experience they expect.

A different path from Stripe

The news was flagged by The Information, which noted that the move runs counter to how Stripe handles agent shopping. Stripe issues a single-use virtual card for agents, connected to the cardholder's account. According to that report, card networks worry this approach lessens their control over the shopping and payment process. It can also make it harder to tie the buyer to the actual purchase.

Where this fits

Shopify announced last month that browser agents could check out on the sites of its eligible merchants. Agents could already search items, browse collections and add products to a cart. Paying was the missing step, and shoppers are cautious about it. A PYMNTS Intelligence survey found that 56% of shoppers would let an agent search and compare products. Only 35% would give an agent their saved payment details.

Visa CEO Ryan McInerney described the same gap last month. "We are seeing adoption for shopping, but not yet for autonomous payments," he said. The barrier, in one word, is trust.

What is not known yet

The material does not say when this will be available to shoppers or which stores will support it. It also does not explain the technical details of how the agent pays without seeing the card. For now, the announcement shows where the big payment companies want agent shopping to go: a design where your card details stay protected.

The takeaway

If you let an AI agent buy for you, look for a setup where it never sees your card and your rewards and protections still apply.
