Shopify is letting AI shopping assistants pay for items at its stores. In its fall update, the company said its digital wallet, Shop Pay, now works with AI agents. These are assistants that can take actions for you, not just answer questions. Shopify also launched a free service to help store owners fight fraud and payment disputes.
What changed
Shop Pay can now be used inside several AI assistants. Shopify listed these:
- Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct
- Muse, the AI agent from Meta
- Microsoft's Copilot, for purchases from Shopify merchants
Merchants can also preview their stores inside agents. Shopify added tools to help them create digital products for agents. It also added Alipay, WeChat Pay and GrabPay with native support, so shoppers can pay with more of their local payment methods.
How the payments are protected
Shopify says purchases made by AI agents are secured with tokens issued by Discover, Mastercard and Visa. A token is a coded stand-in for card details. It lets a payment go through without passing along the card number itself.
Help for merchants
The new service is called Shopify Protect. It costs merchants nothing and builds on Shopify's existing fraud measures. The goal is to stop fraud before a transaction becomes an order.
If a suspect transaction still becomes an order and ends in a dispute, Shopify says it will help the merchant counter it. It uses new AI tools to gather and format the evidence banks want. Shopify says dispute win rates have been up to 1.6 times higher by category since the service debuted. That figure comes from Shopify.
What is not clear
The material does not say when each feature reaches every merchant. It also does not say whether AI purchases carry any extra cost, or how many shoppers will buy this way.
