Shopify, the Ottawa-based platform behind millions of online and in-person stores, now lets AI assistants finish checkout for shoppers. You can ask an assistant to find something, and it can fill in the forms and get the order ready. The final order is only sent after you confirm it.

What changed

Checkout has always been built for people clicking through forms. Shopify now supports browser-based AI agents, which are assistants that carry out tasks on the web for you, completing that step on stores built on its platform. The company says merchants do not need to set up anything new. The feature works inside the existing checkout.

Why the confirmation step matters

The agent can gather items, enter details and prepare the order. The person still approves the purchase. This is meant to balance convenience with trust, since many shoppers may be wary of software spending their money without asking.

Who it affects

Shoppers could one day ask an assistant to compare options, check reviews and place an order in one go. Store owners may start seeing orders that came from an assistant, not from a person browsing their site.

There may also be a business upside. If shoppers rely on assistants, stores that work well with them could have an edge. Independent brands might also find it easier to reach buyers without going through a large marketplace. The material describes that as a possibility, not a certainty.

What is not known yet

Several practical questions are open. Returns, disputes and fraud checks all get harder to sort out when an agent places the order. It is also unclear how agents choose products, how prices and promotions appear to them, and how many shoppers will want to hand over this task. Which AI assistants will use the feature, and how widely, has not been shown.

What to do

  • If you sell online, review how your pricing and promotions would look to an assistant.
  • Check that your return and customer service steps still work if an agent placed the order.
  • Ask your payment provider how fraud protection applies to agent-placed orders.

Shopify's quarterly results and product announcements may show how much merchants and shoppers actually use agent checkout.

The takeaway

AI assistants can now complete checkout on Shopify stores with your approval, so store owners should check how returns and service handle those orders.
