Shopify lets AI chatbots run your online store and shop for you

Shopify's Fall '26 update lets store owners manage orders from AI chatbots and lets shoppers use those same bots to find and buy products.

Shopify has added a way to run an online store by talking to an AI chatbot, and a way for shoppers to let a chatbot do their buying. The changes are part of its Fall '26 Edition, called "Exponential." Store owners can now connect nine AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, to their stores.

What changed

The new Shopify Connectors let merchants manage products, inventory, orders and performance data without leaving the AI conversation. The nine assistants are ChatGPT, Claude, Claude Duet, Microsoft Copilot, Google Gemini, Grok, Grok Bot, Muse and Perplexity.

Shopify's own assistant, Sidekick, was rebuilt. It can now run calculations, write code, search the internet and remember what a merchant tells it. Shopify says daily Sidekick sessions grew 4.2 times over the past year.

  • Canvas puts a whole store in one editable view. It is in early access.
  • SimGym tests proposed changes, and nothing goes live until the merchant reviews it.
  • New fraud tools use signals from across Shopify's network of businesses.

How shoppers fit in

Shopify also released Shop.md, a file that turns an AI agent into a personal shopper. A shopper points ChatGPT, Claude or another agent to it. The agent can then search more than a billion products, suggest items based on preferences and order history, and complete the purchase through Shop Pay.

Shop Pay checkout now works inside Muse from Meta, Claude Duet and Instinct. Shopify says more than 400 million people have Shop Pay accounts. The buyer stays in control, and their card is never shared with the agent.

Control for store owners

A new Knowledge Base page, under Sales channels > Agentic in the admin, lists the facts AI agents receive about a store. These include return policies, shipping destinations and gift services. Shopify drafts the first version from the storefront, but nothing reaches an agent without the merchant's approval.

A Catalog eligibility view shows whether a store qualifies for Shopify Catalog, the product database agents draw from. It also links to fixes. Shopify's VP of Product, Vanessa Lee, said orders from AI channels land in the merchant's admin with the customer's name, email and shipping details, like any other sale.

Beyond the chatbots

Shopify's shopping app, Shop, now has a website at Shop.com with shoppable posts and personalized sections. A universal checkout lets shoppers put items from several merchants in one cart and pay once.

What is not known yet

The material does not say what any of this costs, or when each feature reaches every merchant. Only Canvas is described as early access. It also gives few details on how the fraud tools work.

The takeaway

If you sell online, open the Knowledge Base page in your Shopify admin and check that your return, shipping and gift facts are right before AI agents use them.
