Shopify has added new payment technology to Shop Pay, its checkout button, that is meant to let AI assistants buy things on a shopper's behalf. The tools were created by Visa, Mastercard and American Express. The move runs counter to how Stripe, a rival payments company, mainly handles AI shopping and credit cards.
What changed
Shop Pay is the button many online stores use to take payments. Shopify says it now supports agentic payment tools from the three big card networks. "Agentic" simply means software that can act for you, such as an AI assistant that finds a product and completes the purchase. Each card network has introduced its own version of this kind of technology.
Who it affects
Store owners who use Shopify are the most direct group. If AI assistants begin buying from online shops, the way a checkout handles those buyers could matter. Shoppers who use card-based AI tools may also notice it over time. Stripe's different approach means the payments world is not settled on one method.
What is not known yet
- When shoppers and stores will be able to use these tools
- Whether merchants need to turn anything on or pay extra
- How the tools will protect buyers if an assistant makes a mistake
- How Stripe's approach differs in practice
What to do
Nothing urgent is required based on what has been shared. Sellers on Shopify can ask the company how Shop Pay will treat AI-driven orders. Sellers who use Stripe can ask the same question there. Knowing the answer early is cheaper than learning it after the first odd order arrives.
The takeawayIf you sell online, ask your checkout provider how it will handle purchases made by AI assistants.
