Samsung's 27-inch Odyssey G80HF is on sale for $599.99 at Amazon and B&H Photo. That is $100 below the best price it has hit before. It is a 5K monitor, meaning a very sharp screen, and it is built with gamers in mind. That mix is not common at this price.
What it offers
The screen has two modes. One runs at 5K resolution at up to 180Hz. The other drops to 1440p, a lower resolution, and runs at up to 360Hz. Hz is how many times per second the picture refreshes, and higher numbers look smoother in fast games. Samsung also lists Nvidia G-Sync compatibility and AMD FreeSync Premium, which keep the screen in step with a graphics card.
The monitor also lists a one-millisecond response time. That is common on gaming monitors, even ones that cost hundreds less. It is rarer on a 5K model at this price, according to The Verge.
Ports and limits
- One DisplayPort 2.1 port, though Samsung does not advertise its bandwidth
- Two HDMI 2.1 ports
- A USB hub with two USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports for charging or connecting accessories
How it compares
Many 5K monitors target Mac users who want a cheaper alternative to Apple's Studio Display and its sharp 218ppi screen. Not all of them game well. The Verge's reviewer tried KTC's sub-$500 5K model last year and called gaming on it pretty atrocious, despite its gaming-ready claims.
LG's 27-inch UltraGear evo 5K Mini LED costs $200 more, at $799.99. It has more dimming zones for a more accurate picture and can get brighter. It also takes USB-C video input and can charge a device at up to 90W. Its refresh rates are lower, at 165Hz and 330Hz, which the reviewer does not see as a real downside.

The takeawayIf you want one screen for sharp work and smooth gaming, the Samsung Odyssey G80HF at $599.99 is $100 below its best earlier price.
