Samsung's new Galaxy SmartTag 3 is now on sale in its online store. One tracker costs $29. A four-pack costs $99 and comes with two white and two black trackers. Samsung announced the tag last month, but it is only now available to buy.
What it does
An item tracker is a small tag you attach to keys, a bag or similar things so you can find them later. The SmartTag 3 is more compact and uniform in shape than earlier designs. It drops the built-in loop, though. It offers leave-behind alerts, which warn you when you walk away from an item, plus location history and routine activation.
The battery is rated for 550 days. The tag is rated IP67, which means it resists water and dust.
The catch
The SmartTag 3 works with Samsung's Galaxy Find network, not Google's larger Find My network. That limits it to Galaxy devices and iPhones, since Samsung's iPhone app will support basic connectivity with the tag.
The reason Samsung skipped Google's network is not explained. The material also does not say whether the tag will be sold in stores or outside Samsung's website.
Who it is for
The tag suits people who already own a Galaxy phone and want a low-cost way to keep track of everyday items. Anyone who prefers Google's network should look at other trackers first.
The takeawayBefore buying a tracker, check that it works with the network your phone uses, because the SmartTag 3 skips Google's Find My network.
