Samsung has launched Wallet Perks in the US, a new part of the Samsung Wallet app that gives Galaxy owners cash back when they shop. The launch was announced on October 29. It covers more than 3,500 brands and over 25,000 in-store and dining partners. Samsung says an update is rolling out now to eligible users.

What it does

Wallet Perks is powered by Rakuten, a company known for cash back shopping. When you buy from a participating brand, you earn money back. Samsung lists fashion, beauty, home, travel, entertainment and everyday essentials as categories.

  • Sephora
  • Expedia
  • PetSmart
  • Gap Inc.
  • Lands' End
  • LEGO

Those are named examples. Samsung says there are many more.

Deals tailored to you

The app is designed to show deals based on your shopping activity. A new Nearby feature points out participating restaurants and brands close to you where you can earn cash back. This means the offers are not only for online shopping.

Turning rewards into spending money

Cash back you earn goes into Samsung Cash on the Samsung Cash Card. Samsung describes this as spendable money you can use at checkout. You can also send Samsung Cash to other eligible Samsung Wallet users anywhere in the US.

The holiday shopping angle

New Rakuten members start with an extra 10% cash back, up to an extra $50, on qualifying purchases. All users should also see higher Rakuten cash back rates during the biggest shopping moments of the year, including Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals.

What is not clear yet

Samsung says availability, participating brands, offers, Samsung Cash features and eligibility may vary. The material does not say which Galaxy models get the update first. It also does not give the usual cash back rates or say whether any fees apply. Because deals are based on shopping activity, it is worth checking the app's settings and terms before you sign up.

The takeaway

If you have a Galaxy phone in the US, check Samsung Wallet for the update before Black Friday, and read the offer terms first.
