Google Cloud has started offering OpenAI's AI models to its business customers. Three models are in its model garden, which is Google's catalog of AI models: GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna. For now they are in private preview, an early test phase open only to select enterprise customers.
What changed
Google says it is now the only hyperscale cloud provider offering all three leading closed source models. Hyperscale means one of the very largest cloud companies. Closed source means the maker keeps the inner workings private. Google also lists more than 200 other first-party, third-party and open models on the same platform.
How it works
Google's pitch is that no single model fits every task. Customers can pick and swap models based on performance, speed and cost, without being locked in or signing separate vendor contracts. OpenAI models are sold through Google Cloud Marketplace, so usage shows up on one Google Cloud invoice. It also draws down existing cloud commitments and counts toward Flexible Savings Plans.
Starting today, selected customers can use the models in these ways:
- Build with the models through Google's APIs, the connections developers use to plug AI into software.
- Connect local Codex CLI and Desktop workflows to Google's Gemini platform for inference, which means running the model to get answers.
- Fill out an interest form to ask for access.
Who it affects
This mainly touches companies and developers who already build on Google Cloud. Box, a content management company, says it plans to use OpenAI models through Google Cloud. Its AI products leader said this would pair OpenAI's models with Google's security and compliance tools. Everyday users may see the effect later, inside the tools their companies use.
What is not known yet
The announcement does not give prices, name the chosen customers or say when access will widen. Google says more models are coming soon. It also says OpenAI models will come soon to Gemini for business and Google Antigravity, but it gives no dates.
The takeawayOpenAI models are now in Google Cloud, but only select business customers get access, so most readers should wait and watch.
