OpenAI is letting some users text their AI assistant the way they would text a friend. The feature, announced October 28, 2026, lets you message a personal agent called Dot through iMessage or RCS. It is a preview, and only ChatGPT Pro users in the U.S. can use it.
What it does
You can send Dot text, photos or voice notes. Give it a task to take off your plate, or something to keep an eye on. Dot can then text you updates on its own, without waiting for you to ask. What Dot remembers is shared between ChatGPT and text messages, so a conversation carries over when you switch between them.
To set it up, open your Dot profile in ChatGPT and select "Texting." On iPhone, iMessage must be turned on. On Android, RCS must be turned on. RCS is the modern texting standard that replaces old-style text messages.
Safety and who gets it
OpenAI says only you can text your Dot, and Dot can only text you. The company is working with a firm called Linq and says it ran penetration testing, where experts try to break in to find weak spots, to check security.
ChatGPT Plus subscribers cannot use Dot yet. OpenAI has not announced when other plans or regions will get the feature. Until you trust the setup, it makes sense to keep sensitive personal details out of your texts to Dot.
The takeawayIf you have ChatGPT Pro in the U.S., you can try texting Dot now, but hold back private details until you trust it.
