Nothing has released Nothing OS 5.0, a major software update built on Android 17. The rollout began on October 12, 2026 with the Nothing Phone (3). Other supported phones get it in phases, and timing depends on the model and region. The update changes how the phone looks, adds a few new tools and tightens privacy controls.
What changed
Nothing did not rebuild its software. It refined the existing interface and added new pieces. The company says the update focuses on personalization, smarter AI features and smoother everyday performance.
- A new Geist typeface, updated system icons and smoother animations
- Transparent-style widgets and new lock-screen clock designs
- Separate Notification and Quick Settings panels
- Smart Collections and an Essential Apps Builder
Smaller fixes are in there too. In the Camera app, a scanned QR code result now stays in a fixed spot, so it is easier to tap. Gallery adds sorting by date added or capture date, and filters for favorites, edited images, photos, videos and screenshots.
Home screen and Glyph lights
The home screen can match colors to your wallpaper and tint app icons. You can also select several icons and widgets at once and move them together, even between pages. That should help anyone with a crowded home screen.
Glyph is the light pattern on the back of Nothing phones. A new Glyph app puts its settings, sounds, ringtones and schedules in one place. A new Glyph Timer widget starts a countdown and shows the time left on the back lights, so you do not need to wake the screen. Glyph features depend on the hardware, so not every model will get everything.
New widgets and AI tools
Away Time tracks your longest breaks from your phone and shows a weekly view. It does not block apps or set limits. It only shows your habits. Collector turns a photo into a sticker-like item on your home or lock screen, such as sneakers, coffee or a pet.
Essential Space, Nothing's tool for saving and organizing information, gets Smart Collections. It can spot related captures, such as several screenshots and notes about one project, and suggest grouping them. Search and capture also improve.
The update also adds support for Model Context Protocol, or MCP. In plain terms, it lets compatible AI tools reach selected items in Essential Space. For now, access is read-only. Those tools can search and read, but cannot change what you saved.
What is not known yet
The material does not say which phones besides the Nothing Phone (3) get the update, or when each one will. It also does not list a price, which is likely because the update is software for phones that are already out. Some of the visual changes are part of the general release and were not in the earlier Open Beta.
The takeawayIf you own a Nothing phone, expect Nothing OS 5.0 in stages, with the exact timing and features depending on your model and region.
