- 2Read your bank statements and insurance explanation of benefits forms for charges or care you do not recognize.
- 3Report anything suspicious right away to your bank, insurer or other institution involved.
- 4Watch your mail for a notification letter from NorthShore once its data review is finished.
NorthShore Health Centers, a nonprofit healthcare provider in Porter, Lake, La Porte and Jasper Counties in Indiana, has warned patients that hackers got into parts of its network. A ransomware group called Insomnia says it did it, and it has already leaked the stolen data online.
What happened
NorthShore says it spotted suspicious activity on August 10, 2026. Outside experts found that an unnamed unauthorized party had access to parts of its systems on August 10 and 11, and may have viewed or taken files with patient information. The provider posted its notice on October 14, 2026.
Ransomware gangs steal data, then demand money to keep it private. Insomnia listed NorthShore on its dark web leak site and threatened to publish the files if no ransom was paid. It then published them. The HIPAA Journal did not download the data, but the file listing suggests patient records are likely in it.
What is at risk
NorthShore is still reviewing the data, so it has not said how many people are affected or exactly what was taken. It says names, Social Security numbers, details about medical treatment and conditions, and health insurance information were likely involved. That mix can be used for identity theft and insurance fraud.
Current and former patients are the ones to worry about. The material gives no sign that people who were never NorthShore patients are affected. Letters will go out to affected people once the review is done, so keep an eye on your mail.
The alert box above lists the steps to take now, including a fraud alert and credit freeze. Waiting for the letter is not necessary, since the data is already public.
The takeawayIf you have ever been a NorthShore patient, act now to protect your credit instead of waiting for a letter.
