Nokia and NVIDIA announced that AI is being built into the radio equipment that carries your phone signal. The goal is to squeeze more capacity and performance out of the airwaves carriers already hold. Nokia says the system is being added to live networks and moving closer to deployment.
What changed
The radio access network is the towers and radio gear that connect your phone to the network. Nokia and NVIDIA are now applying AI to tasks inside the 5G signal, including beamforming and scheduling. Nokia's software runs on NVIDIA computing hardware. The platform it builds on was announced in July.
A second part covers running the network. Nokia says AI agents, which are programs that take actions on their own, can work across radio, core, transport and cloud systems. Nokia says operators keep oversight, and guardrails govern how each action is tested and carried out.
Who it affects
Mobile carriers are the direct customers. Etisalat UAE, MEO and Airtel are working with Nokia to identify use cases and integration timelines. Everyday users would feel it only if carriers adopt the tools and the network gets better.
What is not known yet
- No launch dates for any carrier.
- No speed or capacity numbers.
- No details on which networks will go first.
Nokia is showing sensing features at NVIDIA GTC Berlin, but the announcement offers no proof of gains for phone users yet.
The takeawayNokia and NVIDIA promise smarter cell towers that get more from existing airwaves, but without dates or speed figures, treat it as early.
