Netflix has started testing a new tab called AI Discover that suggests movies and shows based on your mood. It sits at the top of the Netflix TV app screen. For now, only a limited group of US customers can try it, as part of a testing and feedback phase.
What it does
At launch on Tuesday, the first option is built around moods. A viewer can pick something like "Scare Me" and see which movies or shows the app highlights. The tab also surfaces themes such as Solo Movie Night or Swoon-worthy love stories. Pick one and a page opens with titles, each showing art, a trailer or a description.
You can also steer it. Clicking "Tune Your Recommendations" on a title gives two choices: keep recommending more like it, or stop. If you choose "Do not recommend," Netflix asks whether you already watched it or are just not interested. That answer helps train the AI to fit you better.
What is not known yet
Netflix plans to open the feature to others in the coming weeks. The material does not say who is in the test group, whether it will reach beyond the TV app, or what other experiences will arrive as the rollout continues. Netflix executives first discussed plans for AI recommendations on the first-quarter earnings call, months ago.
The takeawayIf you get Netflix's new Discover tab, use the Tune Your Recommendations option on titles to teach it what you like and what to skip.
