Motorola has announced the Moto Buds Ultra 27, its most feature-packed earbuds so far. They take aim at Apple's AirPods Pro and Samsung's Galaxy Buds 4 Pro. The headline features are Bose-tuned sound, noise cancellation that adjusts on its own, and live translation you hear in your ears.
What they do
Each earbud uses two drivers, the small parts that produce sound. One is an 11mm dynamic driver. The other is a dedicated balanced armature that handles different frequencies. Bose tuned the sound, and Bose QuietControl noise cancellation adapts to what is around you. A Transparency Mode lets outside sound in when you need it.
For calls, each earbud has three microphones and a Voice Pickup Unit. Motorola says this can improve call clarity and voice recordings.
Battery and build
- Up to 8 hours on one charge, and 37 hours with the charging case
- Wireless charging for the case
- IP57 water and dust resistance
- Works with Google's Find Hub network for locating lost gear
The AI features
AI Live Translate lets you hear a translated conversation through the earbuds. It needs a compatible Motorola phone with the built-in translation app. Language availability varies, so check before counting on it.
Motorola's Qira assistant is built in. Long-press the left earbud to ask a question or request help. Hands-free "Hey Qira" activation is planned for the coming months.
You can also answer or reject calls by nodding or shaking your head. Other features include Wear Detection, Dual Connection and Audio Share.
Who should pay attention
These are aimed at people who want AirPods-style earbuds without an iPhone. Note that Dolby Atmos and Dolby Head Tracking also require compatible Motorola phones. Hi-Res Audio is supported too. If you use another brand of phone, some of the headline extras may not work for you.
What is not known yet
The earbuds will reach the United States in the coming months. Motorola has not announced a US price or release date. The material also does not say which phones count as compatible or which languages translation will cover.
The takeawayBefore getting excited about the Moto Buds Ultra 27, check whether your phone supports the translation feature, and wait for a US price.
