Who is affectedMicrosoft 365 Family and Microsoft 365 Premium subscribers, especially households with several members who store lots of files in OneDrive.
What to do
  1. 1Watch for Microsoft's notice about the change before your plan renews.
  2. 2Check how much storage each family member is using in OneDrive.
  3. 3Delete old files or move them to another backup before the new limit applies.
  4. 4If you need more room, the plan owner can buy extra packs and assign them to members.

Microsoft is shrinking the storage in its 365 Family plan. Instead of up to 6TB, everyone on the plan now shares 2TB. The price stays the same at $13 a month or $130 a year. The change reaches your plan when it renews.

What changed

Before October 8, each member of a Family plan got 1TB of their own. With up to six members, that added up to 6TB. Now there is one shared pool of 2TB. Microsoft 365 Premium, which includes everything in Family plus more advanced AI features, gets the same change.

Microsoft 365 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and OneDrive. Files you create in those apps are saved in Microsoft's cloud and count toward the allowance. Because the pool is shared, it is easy to see who is using the most space.

Who should pay attention

Households with several members who keep lots of files in OneDrive are most likely to feel this. A household that stores very little is less likely to notice. If you need more room, extra storage comes in packs of 100GB, 500GB, 1TB or 6TB, up to 10TB added. The plan owner can assign packs to the members who need them.

What happens next

Microsoft says it will send a notification with details before the change is applied to your plan. The steps in the alert box above explain how to prepare. Pack prices and what happens to files over the new limit were not part of the details available.

The takeaway

Check how much of the new shared 2TB your family is using in OneDrive before your plan renews.
