Meta may delay new business terms again after publisher backlash

Meta says it will likely delay its new business terms again after publishers worried the rules could let it train AI on their content. Current terms stay for now.

Meta says it will probably delay its new business terms a second time. The terms were first due October 30, then moved to November 20. Meta now says the date may slip further while it talks with publishers who fear the terms would let the company train its AI on their content.

What changed

The terms first appeared to give Meta permission to train its AI models on news sites that use Facebook and Instagram. Meta later removed language saying it could "train" its products on content scraped from those sites. Legal experts told Nieman Lab the update still does not rule that out.

Meta communications head Andy Stone wrote on X that the company does "not plan to make policy changes without a full consultation with industry groups and leaders." He said the talks could run past November 20, and if they do, Meta would delay the updated terms. "Until then our existing terms remain in place," he said.

Who is pushing back

The News/Media Alliance has objected. So have lawmakers from both parties. Sen. Marsha Blackburn, a Republican from Tennessee, said the terms show Meta is "attempting to exploit American creators and businesses." Sen. Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, urged Meta to reverse the change.

What is not known yet

Meta has not given a new date. It has not said what the final wording will be, or whether it will clearly rule out AI training on publisher content. If you run a business page on Facebook or Instagram, nothing changes today, but watch for updated terms.

The takeaway

Your current Meta terms stay in place for now, so watch for revised wording on how Meta may use your content for AI.
