Mastercard has signed a broad partnership with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. The goal is to let AI helpers find, choose and pay for things on your behalf. CEO Michael Miebach announced the deal on the company's earnings call on October 29, 2026. He was also frank about the limits: it is still early days, and the numbers are not yet significant.

What the deal covers

The agreement includes Agent Pay, Mastercard's payment product for AI agents. An agent is an AI tool that acts for you instead of just answering questions. Miebach said the deal goes well beyond that product. It also covers payments, joint growth in services, and AI transformation. He called this kind of shopping "the next evolution of digital commerce." He said agentic transactions are growing at impressive weekly rates and that he expects holiday shopping to speed up adoption.

Four things Mastercard says it needs

Miebach said AI shopping only works if people can trust four things: the payment, the agent, the wider system, and whether enough merchants take part. Mastercard says it has a product for each.

  • Agent Pay checks that the buyer authorized the agent, and both merchants and banks know about the purchase.
  • Verifiable Intent records what the buyer meant to do during the payment.
  • Agentic Trust Intelligence helps banks and merchants judge purchases started by any AI agent.
  • Agent Connect helps merchants become visible to AI agents.

Shopify is one of the first large users. Miebach said its Shop Pay uses Agent Pay to keep payment details secure from start to finish.

Tokens, not temporary card numbers

Miebach said Mastercard backs full tokenization. A token is a stand-in code that replaces your real card number, so the store never sees it. Mastercard does not back one-time virtual card numbers, which are temporary card numbers. He described them as a bridge toward fully tokenized payments and said Mastercard is not supporting them as a stopgap. He also called today's AI shopping world a "patchwork."

The risks

The company was open about the downside. Miebach described AI as a tool in the hands of scammers. CFO Ling Hai said, "AI will create more vulnerabilities," and that Mastercard will need to build solutions for them. She also said AI shopping will not be the only way people buy. In her words, it will be "multimodal."

What is not known yet

The material does not say when the OpenAI tie-up will reach shoppers, or what you will be asked to approve before an agent pays. It also gives no figures for how many purchases AI agents make today. Those details will decide how much control buyers actually have.

The takeaway

AI agents may soon pay for you, so check how your card is protected and what you must approve before any purchase goes through.
