The IRS has opened an online training site for tax professionals, and it could matter to anyone who pays someone to do their taxes. The 2026 IRS Nationwide Tax Forum Online offers 15 new seminars. Topics include digital asset reporting, recently updated tax laws, and handling IRS audits and collection cases.

What is offered

The seminars are interactive video presentations. Twelve run 50 minutes, earn one continuing education credit and cost $29 each. Three run 100 minutes and give two credits for $58. Continuing education credits are how professionals show they keep learning.

One seminar is titled "Operating a Retirement Plan for the Do-It-Yourself Small Business Owner." Professionals can also audit the seminars for free. They sign in or create an account on the IRS Nationwide Tax Forum Online website.

Why it matters to you

IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano said tax professionals provide "an important link between the Service and the taxpaying public." If you use a preparer, these courses are one way they can keep up with new rules.

What is not known

The material does not say how many professionals will take the seminars. It also does not say whether the free option earns credits. The simplest step is to ask your preparer whether they use these courses and how they keep up with rule changes.

The takeaway

If a professional prepares your taxes, ask how they stay current on new rules, audits and retirement plan questions.
