Apple has added a way to prove you are an adult with a selfie. The option arrived in iOS 27.2 and iPadOS 27.2. It means some users can skip handing over a credit card or government ID. MacRumors reported the change, citing a new Apple support document.
How it works
The feature estimates whether you are an adult by analyzing your face. You follow onscreen prompts to turn and tilt your head, so the camera sees your face from four directions.
Apple says the work is split between your device and its Private Cloud Compute system. The results are combined on your device. Apple says the images stay inaccessible to the company and to anyone else during processing. After you pass, the selfie is deleted.
When you might see it
The selfie option may be offered to users who get an age confirmation prompt. Availability varies by location, and regional requirements decide when adult verification is needed. Possible triggers include:
- Setting up an Apple Account
- Installing a software update
- Opening apps rated 18+
- Changing safety controls
Once you have established that you are an adult, Apple says no further confirmation is needed.
The report does not list which regions are supported. It also does not say what happens if the estimate does not show you are an adult. Apple's support document is the place to look for those details.
The takeawayIf your iPhone asks for proof of age, a selfie may now be an option in your region, and Apple says the photo is deleted after you pass.
