iOS 27 adds new photo editing tools, slideshow controls and a way to find ID photos on iPhone, though what the update does for Shared Albums is not fully spelled out.

Apple's Photos app is getting a solid round of upgrades in iOS 27. You will be able to fix crooked shots without cropping, shift the angle of a photo after you take it, and find pictures of your passport or driver's license in one place. Slideshows also get real customization for the first time.

New editing tools

Three editing tools run on Apple Intelligence, Apple's name for its AI features. The first is Extend. It fills in missing edges, so you can straighten a crooked horizon without cutting out anything important. It can also change a photo's shape, known as the aspect ratio, and fill in the gaps.

The second is Spatial Reframing. You touch and drag a photo and see the perspective shift in real time, as if you had moved the camera. Apple says it only generates new content where the angle changed, so the photo stays consistent with the original scene.

The third is Clean Up, which arrived in iOS 18. Apple says it gets a major upgrade, with better quality and more realistic fill-in, even in complex scenes.

Finding photos faster

Two new collections appear under Utilities in the Photos app.

  • Captured by Me shows only photos you took, leaving out screenshots and images saved from others.
  • Identity Documents scans your library and surfaces photos of items like a driver's license or passport.

You can also add keywords to photos. Scroll up on a photo and look near the bottom for the new Add Keywords option. Captions still work too. Apple also mentions album organization improvements, but it does not say what they are.

Slideshows and Shared Albums

Slideshows have been easy to make in Photos for years, but you could not customize the automatic ones. Now you can change the transition type and set a length for the whole slideshow and for each photo. You can also save any slideshow as a video with one tap.

iCloud Shared Albums get their first major upgrades in years. The source article's overview does not list the changes, so the details are not clear yet. The author suggests the timing is likely tied to Apple's new HomeView product, though that is his read, not an Apple statement.

What to keep in mind

The Identity Documents collection is handy, but it also shows how many sensitive photos can sit in a camera roll. It is worth checking where those images are stored and who can see them, especially if you share albums.

There are no big design changes to Photos in iOS 27. If you hoped for the look from before iOS 18, this update does not bring it back. Siri AI is the headline feature of iOS 27, but Photos gets plenty of attention too.

The takeaway

iOS 27 makes Photos better for fixing and finding pictures, so check where your passport and license photos are stored.
