Apple released iOS 27.2 for iPhone on Monday, after about six weeks of testing with early users. The update adds new tools for FaceTime, the Apple TV app, Podcasts, Messages and Music. It also includes security fixes, so it is worth installing soon.
What changed
The biggest additions are in FaceTime and the TV app. Group FaceTime calls can now use the front and back cameras at the same time. Apple calls this Dual Capture. The people on the call see you and whatever you are pointing the phone at.
- Dual Capture in Group FaceTime needs an iPhone 17 or newer, and everyone on the call must run iOS 27.
- FaceTime can now add a third-party sign language interpreter or live captioner to a call.
- The Apple TV app on iPhone can show up to four live sports streams at once, including MLS, F1 and MLB.
- The TV app on iPhone now supports profiles, which have been on Apple TV boxes for several years.
Smaller touches
Apple Podcasts has a refreshed Up Next queue with two new rows. New Episodes shows the latest from shows you follow. Continue Playing lists episodes you have started, with the most recently played first. Episode lists also get background colors that match the podcast art.
Suggestions in Messages are back. Apple tested them in iOS 27 but pulled them before release. They add quick buttons that let you send items to apps like Calendar and Reminders with one tap. Apple Music also gets a new look, with a new app icon and blue interface accents where red used to be.
Siri AI, the headline feature of iOS 27, now works in five languages and gains several new abilities. The source article lists them, but the details are not included here.
Security and the missing 27.1
The update includes a long list of security fixes. They cover Mail, Safari and Apple Intelligence, along with the Neural Engine, the part of the chip that handles AI tasks. Apple publishes the full list on its website.
There was no general iOS 27.1. That version shipped only on the iPhone Duo, which launched last week. With 27.2, all iPhones are on the same update path again. The Duo also gets two features of its own in this release.
What to do
If you want the new FaceTime camera feature, check your model first. It needs an iPhone 17 or later, and everyone on the call needs iOS 27. The other features and the security fixes are part of the same update, so installing it sooner is the safer choice.
The takeawayInstall iOS 27.2 soon for the security fixes, and check that you have an iPhone 17 or newer if you want dual-camera Group FaceTime.
