Instagram has brought Edits, its video editing app, to Mac computers. The company announced it on Thursday. The desktop version is meant for larger projects that are easier to handle with a big screen, a mouse and a keyboard. It also puts Edits in closer competition with CapCut, the popular editor from ByteDance.
What it does
The Mac app has a full multi-track timeline. That is a strip where you stack many clips and sounds in layers. It also has keyframes for transitions, which are markers that tell the software how something should change over time. Audio waveforms, a picture of the sound, help line up cuts exactly. Creators can import their own font files.
- Licensed and royalty-free music, plus sound and video effects
- Automatic captions in multiple languages
- Custom keyboard shortcuts, or shortcuts imported from other editing software
- Horizontal and vertical video, with watermark-free 4K exports
Why Instagram built it
Brett Westervelt, head of Edits, described the problem in a blog post. A project gets too big for a phone. You have a dozen clips going, and your thumb covers the part of the timeline you need to see. Instagram says the desktop app is meant to handle those bigger projects.
Who it helps
Anyone who makes videos for Instagram, including small businesses, can now edit on a Mac and publish from there. Tagging and location tools are built in. Instagram says this removes the old routine of editing on a computer, downloading the file, moving it to a phone, making more edits and then posting. Audio and text styles saved in the mobile app sync to the desktop version.
The competition
Meta launched Edits last year to challenge CapCut. CapCut has been on both Windows and Mac since 2021, so it has a long head start on computers. Instagram says more than 50 million creators use the mobile version of Edits, and it plans to keep growing that app too.
What is not known yet
The material does not say what the Mac app costs, and it does not mention a Windows version. Instagram says it will ship weekly updates to the desktop editor. It is also working on letting creators edit one project across desktop and mobile without breaks. That feature is not available yet.
The takeawayIf you edit video for Instagram on a Mac, Edits now lets you cut a longer project and post it without moving files to your phone.
