People with an Indian provident fund account can now check their savings by chatting on WhatsApp. They no longer have to log in to the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) website. The chat service shows a balance, the last five transactions and a downloadable passbook. Some early users report errors, so the older options still matter.

What changed

Provident fund, or PF, is a retirement savings account built from worker and employer contributions. EPFO runs it. Union Labour and Employment Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the WhatsApp service on November 1, during EPFO's 74th Foundation Day celebrations. It works as a chatbot, which is an automated assistant that replies to your messages. Through it, members can:

  • Check their accumulated PF balance
  • View their five most recent transactions
  • Download their EPF passbook
  • Get PF information and help with requirements under the Pradhan Mantri Viksit Bharat Rozgar Yojana (PMVBRY)

How to use it

The official EPFO WhatsApp number is 8796441800. The steps are short:

  • Save 8796441800 in your phone contacts.
  • Open WhatsApp and send "Hi" to that number.
  • Pick your language, then choose the service you want.
  • Verify using the mobile number linked to your Universal Account Number (UAN), your PF member ID.
  • Follow the prompts to see your details.

Stay safe

Easy access also gives scammers a reason to pose as EPFO. Members should use only the verified number above. They should never share a UAN password, banking details or one-time passcodes (OTPs) with anyone in a chat. A BankBazaar spokesperson told NDTV the move makes PF information more accessible, but gave the same warning about the official number and about OTPs and passwords.

Early problems

Several users reported glitches. Many described slow replies and a "Something went wrong" message after choosing an option. EPFO had not issued an official response at the time of reporting. The WhatsApp service is an extra way in, not a replacement. Until the problems are fixed, members can still use the EPFO member portal or the UMANG app to see their PF details.

The takeaway

Save only 8796441800 for EPFO on WhatsApp, never share OTPs or passwords, and use the portal or UMANG app if the chat fails.
