How to tell if AI answer tools are naming your business

HubSpot lays out a simple way to check how often AI answer tools cite your business, since website traffic alone no longer shows the full picture.

HubSpot has published a guide on how to measure whether AI answer tools are naming your business, and how you stack up against competitors. The practice is called answer engine optimization, or AEO. It means tracking how often AI tools that write direct answers mention or cite a brand. Measuring it is a top struggle for marketers.

Why traffic numbers miss it

Clicks, impressions and website visits show how pages do in regular search results. They do not show whether an AI answer names your company. HubSpot also points to Ahrefs data from December 2025. When a Google AI Overview appeared, the top-ranking page got a click rate that was 58% lower on average.

Ranking well may not guarantee a citation either. BrightEdge found that about 17% of sources cited in Google AI Overviews also ranked in the organic top 10. That is roughly five out of six citations coming from outside page one. The overlap was 24% in healthcare and 11% in finance.

The numbers to track

HubSpot separates two things. A mention names your brand in an AI answer without a linked source. A citation is an attributed source or a link to your domain. The guide centers on two measures:

  • Citation rate: prompts that cite your brand, divided by total prompts, times 100.
  • Share of voice: your share of mentions compared with named competitors across the same prompts.

The guide also suggests calculating both for each AI platform separately, and for groups of prompts such as a topic or a buyer stage. A prompt is simply the question typed into the AI tool.

Why it matters for business

HubSpot's State of AEO 2026 report says 44% of surveyed marketers have made a business purchase based on brands they found through answer engines. In a separate survey of more than 200 B2B decision-makers, 42% said an AI recommendation made a brand seem more trustworthy. Only 11% said it made a brand seem less trustworthy.

How to read the results

AI answers can change from one run to the next. So these figures are estimates based on a set of prompts, a platform and a time window. They are not fixed rankings. They also do not measure website visits or revenue on their own. HubSpot advises reading them next to traffic, conversion and sales measures. The guide says AEO does not replace SEO.

The takeaway

Choose a fixed set of questions customers ask, check how often AI answers cite you versus rivals, and repeat it on a schedule.
