If you cannot remember which AirPods you own, looking at them will not settle it. Several models share the same design and case. The dependable answer is the model number, which always starts with the letter A. Your iPhone can show it in the Settings app, as Engadget explains.
Why looks fall short
Replaceable ear tips can help a little. They suggest a Pro model rather than regular AirPods. But that is not enough on its own. Within each line, regular AirPods and Pro, several models have identical designs and charging cases.
Why it matters
Knowing your exact model helps you buy accessories that fit. It also lets you check your warranty status. And it tells you whether your earbuds can get a new feature through a software update.
Find it on your phone
- Connect your AirPods to your iPhone or iPad.
- Open Settings and tap your AirPods near the top of the list.
- Or tap Bluetooth, then the lowercase i next to your AirPods.
- Look under About for the Model Number.
On a Mac, open System Settings and follow the same steps, as long as your AirPods are paired with it.
Find it on the AirPods
On AirPods and AirPods Pro, the model number is on the underside of each earbud. On AirPods Max, it is behind the cushion on the left ear cup. Some generations have more than one model number, depending on the charging method or whether they have ANC, which is active noise cancellation. The case has its own model number, different from the earbuds. Compare yours with the list on Apple's AirPods ID page.
Use the serial number instead
If the model number does not work, try the serial number. On an iPhone or Mac, it appears just below the model number. Physically, it is under the charging case lid on AirPods and AirPods Pro. On AirPods Max, detach the left magnetic ear cushion. Many models also print it on each earbud. It is on the original box too, under the barcode or on the receipt. Paste it into Apple's AppleCare and Warranty page, and the site shows the exact model.
