How to add and rearrange apps on a Samsung smart TV

Samsung smart TVs let you search for new apps and reorder your home screen from the remote, which may spare you from buying a separate streaming stick.

Your Samsung smart TV can do more than the apps it shipped with. You can search for new ones right on the TV, then drag your favorites to the front of the home screen. Smart TVs can also run services like Plex, a way to stream your own stored media, without an extra device such as a streaming stick.

What comes built in

Samsung TVs usually come with Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video and Apple TV already installed. That list can change depending on which apps are offered in your region. If those are all you watch, there may be nothing to set up.

How to add an app

Start at the TV's home screen. Use the remote to select the search bar at the top and type the name of the app you want. Select its icon to install it.

If you only want to browse, the apps menu shows what is available, sorted by category. That is also where to look for free channels.

When the install finishes, a button appears that lets you add the app to the home screen. If you leave that screen first, you can still pin the app later. Open the apps menu, press and hold the app, and choose the option to add it to home.

If an app does not show up

A missing app may not be offered in your region. It may also not be supported on Samsung smart TVs at all. Samsung has publicly banned some smart TV apps.

How to rearrange apps

On the home screen, use the remote to highlight the app you want to move. Press and hold the select button to open a menu. Choose the move setting, then slide the app left or right until it sits where you want it.

  • Older TV models may need a different command to open the menu, such as pressing the down key.
  • The same menu lets you remove an app from the home screen.
  • You can also delete an app entirely from that menu.

A few minutes of setup puts the apps you use most at the front, so you spend less time hunting through the screen.

The takeaway

To add an app, search from the home screen. To move, pin or delete one, press and hold the select button on it.
