Granola, an app known for writing up your meetings, now also types what you say out loud. On a Mac, you press the Fn key, start talking, and the app cleans up and formats your speech into finished text. The company says the dictation feature has unlimited words and is free.
How it works
The feature works across all apps. That means you can dictate a note, speak a prompt to an AI tool, or reply to an email or message without typing. The cleanup step matters because raw speech is messy, and the app tidies it before the text appears.
Why it is happening
This is a swap. Months ago, Wispr, known for dictation, added a meeting notetaker. Now Granola has added dictation. The two companies are valued at $1.5 billion and $2 billion, respectively. Other voice startups, including Fireflies, Speechify and Monologue, have also combined note-taking and dictation. Earlier this year, the common approach was one app that does one thing well.
What is not known yet
- Versions for iOS and Windows are promised soon, but no date was given.
- The material does not say whether dictation will stay free.
- It does not say how Granola's dictation compares with Wispr's in accuracy.
The takeawayIf you already use a Mac for emails and notes, Granola's free dictation is worth a try before paying for a separate voice app.
