Google's Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, released in late 2021, are now seen as the phones that shaped everything Pixel became. They also gave early buyers a rough ride. A new look back from 9to5Google calls them one of Google's most polarizing releases, with bugs, slow fingerprint unlocking, overheating and poor cellular connection.
Why expectations were so high
The Pixel line had gone through years of mixed signals. The Pixel 5 before it was charming but clearly mid-range. With the Pixel 6, Google tried to compete with Samsung and Apple. It brought a new design, a custom chip called Google Tensor, big camera upgrades and a price described as shockingly competitive.
What worked
The look stood out. A bar of camera hardware ran across the back and also worked as a natural kickstand, so the phone did not rock on a desk. Google still uses that silhouette today. The standard Pixel 6 had a flat screen and playful colors, while the 6 Pro had polished aluminum edges and a curved screen.
The chip was built less for raw speed and more for on-device smarts, meaning tasks done on the phone itself. That brought:
- Voice typing fast enough to replace tapping the keyboard
- Real-time live translation
- Magic Eraser, which removes unwanted things from photos
- Instant offline speech transcription
What went wrong
The first Tensor chip ran hot. Heavy use or long 4K video recording warmed the phone quickly. Gaming performance was uneven, and battery life varied a lot from one phone to the next. Both models were also heavy, slippery and large, with no small option for people who wanted one.
Google dropped the reliable rear fingerprint scanner for one under the screen. It was slower than rivals, and for thousands of people it was a major frustration. Several software updates tried to improve it, but software could only do so much. The review also calls cellular connection the most damaging problem. The phones used a Samsung modem, the part that handles calls and data.
What it means for buyers
The Pixel 6 shows the risk of buying a first-generation product. The ideas can be strong, and several later became normal, but the rough edges often land on the earliest customers. Waiting a few months for reviews and owner reports can show whether problems are real before money is spent.
The takeawayWith a brand-new product, wait a few months and read owner reviews before buying, because early buyers often find the problems first.
