Google has launched Dreambeans in India, its first market outside the United States. The app, which turns your own digital activity into personal illustrated stories, arrived on Monday for Android and iOS. It supports 13 Indian languages, including Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu and Bengali, plus English.

What it does

Dreambeans connects to Google services you already use: Calendar, Gemini, Gmail, Photos, Search and YouTube. It then writes illustrated stories about your interests and daily life. You do not type a prompt. The app starts the story on its own. Google recently added animation, using its Veo video model, to some stories. The material does not say what the app costs.

Why India

Google says Indian users asked for access, and its services are widely used there. A Google product manager said India stands out because so many people use Gemini, Gmail and Google Photos together. The launch comes less than two months after Google opened the app to all eligible US users aged 18 and older.

What to know before trying it

The app reads personal data, so the connections matter. Google says you can pick which services to link, disconnect them at any time, and delete your Dreambeans data inside the app. It also says items you delete from a connected service are removed from the app's personalization.

  • It works only with personal Gmail accounts, not work accounts.
  • Stories are visible only to the account holder.
  • You can tell the app to avoid subjects, such as business information.
  • It may surface upsetting memories, including stories about people who have died.

Google compares the subject controls to the memory limits in Google Photos.

Limits and early numbers

You can choose only one language at a time. The app can read information in several languages, but it cannot yet write stories that mix them. That may matter in India, where many people blend Hindi and English, often called Hinglish.

In the US, Sensor Tower estimates the app has had nearly 55,000 downloads since June. About 63% came in September. October fell 84% to about 5,500. Its first 30 days after the wider US opening drew an estimated 29,000 downloads, far below general AI apps like ChatGPT at 2.8 million. Dreambeans does a narrower job, so the comparison is not exact.

What happens next

Google says it is exploring ways to make Dreambeans more useful, moving from stories and recommendations toward helping people act on its suggestions. No timeline was given. Whether Indian users take to it better than US users have remains to be seen.

The takeaway

If you try Dreambeans, connect only the Google services you are comfortable sharing, and remember you can disconnect them or delete your data at any time.
