Google is bringing ads into its AI search answers in India and nine other countries. If you ask Google a complex question and get a chat-style AI reply, you may now see ads tied to your question next to the answer or inside it. Google says every one of them will carry a "Sponsored" label.
What changed
Until now, AI answers in these countries were mostly ad-free. Starting in the fourth quarter, ads appear in Google's AI Mode, the conversational way of searching where you type longer questions and get a written reply. Google says queries in AI Mode are on average three times longer than traditional searches.
The first ten countries are India, Australia, Canada, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines and Singapore. In Pakistan, the ads are limited to text ads. The UK, Mexico and Brazil are due to follow later in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Will ads change the answer?
Google says no. The company confirmed that paid ads will not change or influence the information in the AI-written text. The sponsored links are meant to appear alongside the answer as extra suggestions.
That is Google's own promise, and the material does not describe any outside check. The "Sponsored" label is the clearest tool you have for telling an ad apart from the answer itself.
Who it affects
Everyday searchers will see a new kind of ad in a place that used to feel like a plain answer. Business owners who already run Google ads are affected too. Brands will not need to spend extra money or build new campaigns. Google will automatically pull from their existing ad setups.
Google also says people click on these sponsored AI links as often as they click on regular product listings. That figure comes from Google's data. Dan Taylor, Google's Vice President of Global Ads, said research shows people are comfortable with ads in AI Mode and find them highly relevant.
What is different in the US
The US is getting a more advanced version called multi-turn ads. In AI search, people often ask follow-up questions to understand a topic. Multi-turn ads show relevant ads during that back-and-forth chat, as someone researches or compares options. India and the other nine countries get the standard version.
What to do
- Look for the "Sponsored" label before you click a link in an AI answer.
- Business owners can check their existing Google ad setups, since these may now appear in AI answers.
- Treat ad claims as ads, even when they sit inside a helpful-looking reply.
