Google Photos is working on a backup option called Overnight backups. Instead of uploading your photos and videos as you take them, it would wait until nighttime. Android Authority shared the first images of the feature. It has not been released to the public.
What it is
Google Photos is the app many people use to save pictures and videos from their phone to the cloud, which simply means storage on the internet. That way, a lost or broken phone does not mean lost memories. Overnight backups would change when that saving happens, holding it off until night.
Why it could matter
Uploading photos and videos uses data and battery. If the upload waits until night, your phone could save both during the day while still protecting your pictures after dark. That is the main promise of the feature, and it only applies if Google launches it.
Who it affects
Anyone who backs up photos with Google Photos could be touched by this, especially people who watch their data use or battery life during the day. Business owners who shoot lots of product photos or job site videos on their phones may also care.
What is not known yet
The material available does not say when Overnight backups might arrive, or whether it will reach everyone. It also does not explain which hours count as night, or whether you could change them. Features seen in early images do not always launch, and they can change before they do.
The takeawayOvernight backups could let Google Photos save data and battery by waiting until night, but it is only in early images and has no release date.
