Google may be working on a way for a Pixel phone to answer calls for you while you commute. According to a report from Android Authority, the company could finally connect two existing Pixel features: Take a Message and Transit mode. The report gives no release date.

What the two features do

Take a Message is a Pixel feature that answers a call and records what the caller says. You can then see what they wanted without picking up. Transit mode is a Pixel setting meant for use while you travel. Until now, the two have not been tied together.

Why it could matter

Taking a call on a train or bus can be awkward. Other riders hear your conversation, and the noise can make it hard to talk. If the two features were linked, a Pixel could handle calls for you while you ride. You would miss fewer important calls without having to answer them in public.

Who it affects

This matters mainly to people who own a Pixel, Google's own line of phones, and who travel by public transit. Owners of other Android phones are not mentioned in the material.

What is not known yet

  • When the change might arrive, or whether it will arrive at all.
  • Which Pixel models would get it.
  • Whether Transit mode would switch Take a Message on by itself or ask you first.
  • Whether it would be free for everyone who already has a Pixel.

For now, this is a report about work in progress. Plans like this can change before anything reaches your phone.

The takeaway

Pixel owners who ride transit may soon be able to let their phone take calls for them, though Google has not set a date.
