Google Cloud has made a new VMware option generally available. Companies that already run VMware software can bring their existing Broadcom subscriptions and run them on dedicated Google servers. Their IT teams get full administrative control, so daily work can stay the same.
What changed
VMware is software that lets one physical server act like many separate computers. Many businesses rely on it for important systems. Google now offers a self-managed way to run VMware Cloud Foundation, Broadcom's VMware package, on dedicated Google Cloud bare metal. Bare metal means a whole physical server reserved for one customer.
Google already offered a managed service, called Google Cloud VMware Engine, where Google handles patching, updates and monitoring. The new option sits beside it. Teams that want to control their own maintenance windows and plug in third-party monitoring tools can now do that.
What you get
- Full root access across the VMware components, including ESXi, vCenter and NSX Manager.
- Bring your own license: existing Broadcom VCF subscriptions are portable.
- Google Cloud commitments and Flexible Committed Use Discounts can apply to the servers.
- Direct links to Google services such as BigQuery, Gemini, Cloud Run and GKE.
The cost claims
Google says a memory tiering feature, which uses fast local storage as an extra layer of memory, can cut server total cost of ownership by up to 40%. It also says the vSAN storage design can cut storage costs by up to 39% compared with traditional external arrays. It claims up to 80% live patching coverage for critical security updates, which reduces planned downtime. These are Google's figures, not independent tests.
Who it is for
The option suits companies leaving their own data centers, moving important workloads, or wanting a cloud backup site for disaster recovery. It fits teams that have built their own operating routines and do not want to change them. One early tester said it lets them add bare-metal capacity in minutes while keeping full control.
What is not known yet
The material does not give prices or list the regions where the service is available. Companies will need to check license terms with Broadcom and cost details with Google.
The takeawayIf your business runs VMware, Google now offers a way to move it to the cloud with full control and your existing license, but pricing details are still to be confirmed.
