Google's Gemini app can now create, preview and edit files right inside the chat. You can ask for a PDF, a document, a spreadsheet or a slide deck, then fix it on the spot instead of copying text into another app.
What it does
Expand a file to full screen and type your edits directly. You can also highlight text and ask Gemini a question about it, or have Gemini refine the file for you.
Google's example starts with handwritten lecture notes. You upload them, ask for a PDF study guide, then edit it by hand or highlight a section and have Gemini change the text or visuals. These formats are supported:
- PDFs
- Google Docs and Google Sheets
- Slide decks
- Markdown and TXT files
- Code
What to know
PDF preview and editing works on both web and mobile. Every other format works on the web only, so a phone will not do for Docs, Sheets or slides.
Google says the features are available to all users in all languages where the Gemini app is offered. The announcement does not mention price, file size limits or how well the edits hold up on long or complex files. Those details are not known yet.
The takeawayIf you draft reports or slides, try Gemini on the web for edits, but use the mobile app only for PDFs.
