Apple tucked several useful iPhone features out of sight, and Tom's Guide has pulled five of them into one list. They deal with everyday problems: scam attempts, noisy phone calls, signing a document, sleeping through an alarm and tired eyes. Each is already built into the phone and can be turned on in under a minute.

Scam warnings

Impersonation Risk Detection looks for unusual communication patterns that can point to fraud, such as cloned voices or spoofed messages. The check runs on the phone itself, and Apple does not read your messages or emails. If it suspects high-risk fraud, it alerts supported apps before you approve a transfer or hand over a password.

To turn it on, open Settings, tap Privacy & Security, then Impersonation Risk Detection, and flip the switch.

Clearer phone calls

Voice Isolation uses machine learning to favor your voice and filter out wind, street traffic and background chatter. It does not live in the main Settings app. It appears only while a call is underway.

  • Start or answer a cellular or FaceTime call.
  • Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center.
  • Tap Phone Controls (or Mic Mode), then choose Voice Isolation.

A saved signature

The Markup tools can store your signature so you can place it on any document in seconds. Open the document in Files or Photos, or take a screenshot of it. Tap the Markup pen icon, then the plus icon, and choose Signature. Write your name once and tap Done. After that, drag and resize the saved signature to where it belongs.

An alarm that stays loud

Turning your ringtone down for meetings used to risk turning your alarm down too. A separate setting now fixes the alarm volume. Open Settings, tap Sounds & Haptics, and under Alarms & Timers switch Match Ringtone Volume off. Then drag the dedicated slider to the level you want.

Less eye strain

Night Shift warms the screen colors, but it does not address how close you hold the phone. Screen Distance uses the front TrueDepth camera to judge that distance. If the phone stays closer than 12 inches for several minutes, it pauses the display and asks you to move back. Turn it on in Settings, under Screen Time, then Screen Distance.

What is not clear

The article does not say which apps support the scam alerts, or which iPhone models and software versions are needed. If a setting is missing on your phone, those are the first things to check.

The takeaway

Spend a few minutes in Settings to turn on scam detection, lock in your alarm volume and try Screen Distance.
