Apple is expected to announce its first Mac with a touchscreen in about a week. It will be a new MacBook Pro. Apple has not shared a price, but one 9to5Mac writer expects it to cost far more than the current model.
What is reported
The new MacBook Pro is said to have an OLED screen, a display type known for deeper blacks. It may also include a Dynamic Island, the pill-shaped cutout area iPhones use for alerts. Reports say it is lighter than the current model.
The price question
Writer Ben Lovejoy guesses the new model will cost $500 to $700 more, or about $600. That is his estimate, not an Apple figure. For that much, he notes, a buyer could double the RAM (the memory a computer uses to juggle tasks) or double the SSD (the storage for files) on the current model.
Is the screen worth it
Lovejoy expects only a modest gain in picture quality, because Apple's current screens already look very good. He says many people see limited use for touch and worry about fingerprints. A lighter laptop would be welcome, he adds, but only if it comes close to the weight of a MacBook Air.
- Price: not announced
- Exact weight: not shared
- Dynamic Island: only a possibility so far
The takeawayAnyone planning to buy a Mac soon should wait for Apple's price before choosing between the new screen and more memory or storage.
