Firefox is adding a way to pull a web page out of its tab and into a small floating window. The window stays on top while you work in something else. The feature is called Mini Window. It is slated to reach the regular version of Firefox on November 10, according to a ZDNET report.
What it does
Mini Window moves an open tab, or just a section of a tab, into its own window. The window looks like a web app with the browser parts stripped away. There is no address bar or scroll bar showing at first. Move the cursor over it and the address bar, back, forward and reload buttons, and a close button appear. That is all.
The window also stays on top of other Firefox windows. A page you need to look at stays in view while you type in another one.
How to use it
- Right-click a tab, choose Move Tab, then Move to Mini Window.
- To pop out only part of a page, highlight it, right-click, and choose Move Section to Mini Window.
- Hover over the window to reveal the title bar, then drag it where you want it.
Who it helps
The clearest fit is anyone on a small laptop screen. The reviewer's example is writing a paper with the document in one window and a background article in a Mini Window, so there is no clicking back and forth.
There are other uses. On a Mac using Stage Manager, which normally shows one window at a time, a Mini Window can still sit beside the main browser window. It can also hold a search engine or an AI service you want always within reach.
How Chrome compares
Chrome has no direct match. Its Picture-in-Picture mode and Mini Player work only for video and media. Chrome can also save a website as a web app and open it next to the main window. The report says that is less flexible and is not guaranteed to stay on top.
What to do
Mini Window is still in beta. Until November 10, it can be tried only in Firefox Nightly, an early test version that can be installed alongside regular Firefox. Early versions can be less stable. The reviewer says he has used Nightly on Linux and macOS without problems, but results may vary. Most people can wait and update Firefox on November 10. Nothing needs to be switched on. The report does not mention a price.
The takeawayUpdate Firefox on November 10, then right-click a tab and choose Move to Mini Window to keep a reference page floating over your work.
