Discord now shows Markdown files the way they are meant to look. If you upload a .md file, the preview appears neatly formatted, with tables and styling, instead of a wall of symbols. The change came in the company's latest update, released October 22, 2026. The update also adds a new way to organize servers and a bigger file limit for paying members.
What changed
Markdown is a simple way to write text with formatting marks, such as pound signs for headings. Before this update, Discord previews showed those raw marks. Discord says you will now see the file "all nice and neat and pretty instead of with a bunch of symbols." That includes tables and other formatting.
The Verge notes that AI chatbots and AI agents often use Markdown files for instructions and context. That makes the better previews handy for people sharing AI project material on the platform. Discord also pitched it for a more casual use: sharing README files with friends.
Other updates
- Right-click a server or channel icon in the sidebar and choose "Move to..." to reorganize.
- Discord Nitro members can now upload files as large as 1GB.
Who it affects
Anyone who shares notes, guides or project documents as .md files will see the biggest benefit. Recipients can read the file right in the chat without opening another app. People who run busy servers may like the new Move to option. Nitro is Discord's paid membership, so the 1GB upload limit applies only to those subscribers.
Context and what is unclear
Google has also improved its Markdown support. It recently began letting people edit Markdown files directly in Docs without converting them first. The material does not say what Nitro costs, what the limit is for free users, or whether the update has reached every device yet.
The takeawayIf you share .md files on Discord, they should now open readable, and Nitro members can send files up to 1GB.
